Hong Kong is a wildly energetic place with a strange duality: fierce capitalism and yet it is now part of the largest communist country in the world. Hong Kong also has a curious history, much of it intertwined with successful opium smuggling (backed by the then British masters) and struggle. Hong Kong residents are a proud people. There is a huge gulf between the island and mainland China. Time will tell what Hong Kong will become. In the meantime Hong Kong remains a fascinating place to visit.
